Health Research on Transcendental Meditation

Dr. Sidney Weinstein, editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Neuroscience commented:

Over the past 10 years the editors and reviewers of the International Journal of Neuroscience (IJN) have accepted several papers on Transcendental Meditation because they have met the rigorous standards of scientific publication. IJN is honored to have two Nobel laureates on its editorial board, and has a distinguished group of scientists from leading universities on every continent who judge the scientific value of the papers submitted for consideration. Not once have these scientists ever questioned the integrity or scientific validity of the papers on Transcendental Meditation. The fact that the articles on Transcendental Meditation continue to appear in large numbers in reputable journals in addition to IJN demonstrates, at least to me, that this is an area of scientific research that’s here to stay. Any review of Transcendental Meditation literature which overlooks these publications smacks of scientific censorship. Perhaps such reviewers would find it instructive to read about the Galileo affair.

Scientific research has found many health benefits as a result of regular practice of Transcendental Meditation. These include reduced anxiety, decreased intake of alcohol and tobacco, reduced high blood pressure, increased longevity and decreased cardiovascular death compared with control groups. According to the American Heart Association, the Transcendental Meditation technique is the only meditation practice that has been shown to lower blood pressure.

The AHA’s scientific statement* said: “Because of many negative studies or mixed results and a paucity of available trials, all other meditation techniques [including Mindfulness] received a ‘Class III, no benefit, Level of Evidence C’ recommendation. Thus, other meditation techniques are not recommended in clinical practice to lower BP at this time.”

Reduced rates of death, heart attack and stroke

The AHA scientific statement also reported the finding that lower blood pressure through Transcendental Meditation practice is associated with substantially reduced rates of death, heart attack and stroke.

The AHA scientific statement concludes that alternative treatments that include the Transcendental Meditation technique are recommended for consideration in treatment plans for all individuals with blood pressure greater than 120/80 mm Hg.

Four major research findings

Heart health is vital for an active, fulfilling life. A growing number of people are aware of the beneficial effects of Transcendental Meditation on heart health, and how the technique, noted for its effortlessness,  safeguards the heart from future problems.

1. Lower blood pressure

blood pressure chart

In its journal Hypertension, the American Heart Association reported that the Transcendental Meditation technique is the only meditation practice shown to lower blood pressure.

2. Major reduction in heart attack and stroke

heart attack chart

A five-year study – published in the journal Circulation – on patients with coronary heart disease reported a 48% reduction in heart attack, stroke, and death among those practicing the TM technique compared to controls.

3. Decrease in high cholesterol

cholesterol chart

This study in the Journal of Human Stress found that people with high cholesterol who practice the TM technique gained a major reduction in cholesterol levels compared to a control group

4. Reduction in atherosclerosis

This study, published in Stroke, found that those who learned the TM technique showed reduced thickening of the carotid artery. In contrast, the control group who received health education on diet and exercise suffered from continued thickening of the carotid artery.
